Inclusivity checklist

The inclusivity checklist is a list of factors for tutors to consider when setting up study groups in a student cohort. Please make sure you have considered factors when setting up, running and concluding study groups.

Organizational issues

Have you:

ensured that every student has had an equal chance to join a group
facilitated study group communication by setting up an initial meeting time and/or providing them options of tools to communicate
checked if and how students with learning differences want other group members to be informed of their support needs
made students aware of the weekly outputs of the group. For example, you may have asked them to produce shared notes on the reading or completing a quiz together
reinforced inclusive group working practices, e.g. reminding students to check if any non-native English speakers of the group would like any special accommodation such as turning subtitles on during Zoom meetings

Core group rules

Have you:

discussed potential problems and ways of handling them
sought an agreement on ground rules
reminded group members that non-native English students may need extra time to articulate their thoughts and should be encouraged to contribute despite language barriers
reminded the group to:
- give every member equal voice
- to speak in turns
- clarify that all your fellow member’s contributions are valid

Dealing with conflict

Have you:

made the ground rules available to all group members
checked all members participating in the groups have agreed the ground rules
ensured that all members know how to seek help if necessary

Assessment, if group work is assessed

Have you:

checked the marking criteria are available to students before the group work begins
made it clear if the group will be assessed together or individually
ensured your marking criteria recognizes different contributions of group members such as planning, coordinating, research, IT skills, writing skills and presentation skills
