Outline

Theories of conflict and peace are important for understanding and addressing the role of education in societies affected by conflict but are often absent from strategies and interventions for education reform. This topic problematises the complex and multidirectional ways that education and conflict affect one other, recognising the ways in which education can produce inequality, exclusion and other grievances that contribute to conflict, as well as potentially contributing to social cohesion and social peace. It examines contemporary debates on the drivers of war and conflict and the range of factors that have contributed to growing interest in the field of education, conflict and peacebuilding.

This topic looks at the following questions:

Why do people/groups go to war?
What different theories best explain the drivers of contemporary conflicts?
How does education interrelate with the drivers of conflict and war?
What factors have contributed to growing interest in the field of education, conflict and peacebuilding?
